6 Desires: DH Lawrence and Sardinia

1h 25m Documentary, Captioned 2014

D H Lawrence’s Sea and Sardinia is one of his greatest non-fiction books. It’s a passionate account of his time on the island in 1921 with his wife Frieda. It is fuelled by desires – to leave England, to find a more primitive way of life, to encounter people and bodies.

Nearly a century later, this film explores those desires. It retraces Lawrence’s steps across Sardinia and encounters uncommon beauties and some of the same lifestyles that Lawrence describes, but also argues with Lawrence, just as Lawrence argued with the island. 6 Desires: DH Lawrence and Sardinia is a love letter, a portrait of a journey and its wanderlust, but also of a time in which Mussolini was on the rise, and cinema was becoming the art of dreams. Movie history is full of adaptations of books. Using images of Paul Cézanne, Rembrandt and Hélène Cixous, and the voice of Jarvis Cocker, this film tries to rethink such adaptations, and present a famous, moving, revealing journey in a new guise.
