Based on a true story, Fahrije’s (Yllka Gashi) husband has been missing since the war in Kosovo. Like many of the other women in her patriarchal village, her family are living with fading hope and overwhelming grief, as well as facing financial struggles as they try to move on with their life. Despite starting a small agricultural business that allows her to support her family and fellow widows, their act of empowerment and step towards independence is met with hostility from the remaining men in the village.
Against the backdrop of Eastern Europe’s civil unrest and lingering misogyny, Fahrije joins in a struggle to find hope in the face of an uncertain future. This intimate portrayal of grief, resilience and community is both inspiring and significant in its look at hard-won freedoms.
