Les Misérables (2020)
Shot on location in the impoverished Parisian suburb of Montfermeil, Les Miserables follows newcomer Stéphane as he joins the local Anti-Crime squad, working amongst a highly sensitive neighbourhood of intensifying gang-culture. His unscrupulous colleagues operate with unorthodox and aggressive methods, making their presence a constant threat to the community. When an arrest turns violent, the team must reckon with an unanticipated aftermath to stop the neighbourhood from spiralling out of control.
Inspired by the 2005 Paris riots, this fast-paced and urgent feature is amongst the new narratives challenging traditional opinions of what it means to be French in a country captivated by a troubling rise in nationalism.
