My Childhood (1972)

Biography, Drama, Captioned 46min

Set in 1945, the first part of Douglas’ triptych revisits his impoverished childhood, living with his grandmother and half-brother in the Scottish mining village of Newcraighall. Beautiful, but austere black and white camerawork captures eight-year-old Jamie’s daily life in an unsentimental manner, as everyday harsh realities are set against the solace young Jamie finds in the cinema. Bill Douglas’ influential trilogy harks back to his impoverished upbringing in early-‘40s Scotland, with My Childhood illustrating an intensely moving portrait of childhood.
