Caught trying to flee Switzerland, a young Jewish man, Gilles, is arrested by the SS and sent to a camp in Germany. With his execution imminent, Gilles pretends to be Persian to escape persecution, but the lie is forced into an elaborate facade when he is instructed to teach Farsi to the savagely-tempered SS officer Klaus Koch. Unable to speak a word of the language, Gilles must convincingly invent and memorise a new one in a delicate and desperate bid for survival. With an empathetic performance from Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, Persian Lessons is a powerful look at truth, memory and the power of language, set against the horrific backdrop of a devastating war.
